Sticks and Stones
In the winter of 1988, Hall was missing being on the land with The Coil. She was longing for the connection and engagement of that enabling encounter with place, but since she could not lift The Coil alone, nor travel it far from roads without a crew, she imagined a smaller, more private process. Working with 6 beaver-cut sticks she collected from Red Indian Lake in Central Newfoundland, she went walking on the Witless Bay Barrens a few hours from St. John’s.
The images which follow are all that remain of that day and that encounter alone in an empty landscape. They are included here because of their meaning to the artist and the contribution they made to her continuing work on the land, once the seasons changed.
