History Blankets
Between 2004-2008, Hall and Dragu made thousands of “memory cloths” during the 4-year daily correspondence of Marginalia. A great number of these “squares” remained after constructing the History House, and it is these “leftovers” that Hall is now transforming into blankets. Perhaps they will populate the History House if it is ever re-built, but certainly, in the meantime, they will wrap the artist and others in a warm embrace of memory. This “using up”, re-making, and revisiting her own labour is deeply in conversation with other “phrases” in the Memory Blanket series, where she reveals the labour of other women, through her own. The History Blankets will continue to be constructed until all of Hall’s memory cloths from Marginalia, are used up.
The artist is grateful to The Canada Council of The Arts for their support for this work.
