Quiltish

While Hall was working on the Women’s Work Blankets, many folks asked her if she was making quilts. These are not quilts, she replied. They are blankets… they have no pattern, or precision, no geometry or layering, and no over-sewing to hold the layers together. They are not quilts… but ARE “quiltish”. And so began a more “ordered and formal ”  and “quilterly” exploration of the Memory Blankets. What follows are photographic works – made of photographs the artist took of the blankets she had made from things that other women had made. And then exploring the long history of patterns that had guided many quilters she had come to know in her research on local knowledge.

These are all digital works. There are about 170 of them so far. All square and all designed to be printed at 30 x 30 inches and/or to be projected on a wall or fabric screen.

The first experimental projection is below.
